From Arizona to Panama Canal

Tucson to El Fuerte

One week before liftoff

I have made all (LOL) of my plans for the trip, which is going to be 38-days in length.  I am not a a survivalist; so, I do not have all of the gadgets and useless items.  In other words, I will not have the little things that I do NOT immediately need until I really NEED them.  My plan is to “wing it” and hope that I am not backed in a corner in the middle of nowhere.  I am doing almost exclusively AirBNB.  I think it will allow me the chance to be in local neighborhoods with local people.  I hope to gain a better idea and understanding of how people actually live in these towns and environments.  The $17 per night place may be a mistake, but that is to be determined.  I have a train trip arranged for Copper Canyon and a white water rafting trip (with Rick) booked in Costa Rica.  The rest of the sights will be done on day trips and through wandering aimlessly around with a guide book.  I have a good marriage between ocean, mountains, historical sights, and minor/major cities to fill my days.  This last week will be filled with picking out the most innocuous clothes that scream, “leave me alone because I have am poor” and jamming everything into two backpacks.   I do not pretend that I will be fully ready,  because we can never be fully prepared in life(?)  I just need to be flexible and look for learning opportunities.  I will actively avoid problematic places and situations and flow towards enriching and unique experiences.  I believe, on the ground, all people are nice, honest, and have the same basic needs.  This is a good starting point, as I hope to connect, while keeping an open mind and willingness to put myself in their shoes.  I will actively  meet “real people” and have as many engaging conversations as possible (given language barrier).  Since I will be traveling alone for the first 3-weeks, I am guaranteed  to be THIRSTY (as the kids say) for human interaction.  Regardless, my “new” look says that I do not give a shit about myself…I just hope this does not scare people off.

The beast and route

Nicknamed The beast!  My brother-in-law built this car from just a VW shell.  He “tricked out” the baja engine and assures me that 4,000 miles is “not a  problem.”  I got car insurance with roadside assistance “just in case.”  Anyhow, this is the horse, I have chosen to ride into the sunset…for better or worse.  The route below is “rough” and I will be deviating + or – 50-miles on either side of the highway.  I will be exploring sites like copper canyon, Copan, and Bocas Del Toro and walking the streets of historical cities like Guadalajara,  Oaxaca, Antigua, and Granada.  With so many natural wonders to be seen, the oceans, mountains, and rain forest will never be far away.  All and all, I will go through 7 unique countries with my eyes always on the next stop and eventually the great Panama Canal.

The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me!

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.  Mark Twain
